St. Louis, MO (KMOV) — The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating after a police recruit was injured during a ride along in south St. Louis Satuday evening.
Two officers and two recruits arrived to a home in 7700 block of Alaska Avenue for a report of a disturbance just past 6 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, officers began talking to a woman at the front door who was standing next to a pitbull.
According to police, officers told the woman to get a hold of the dog but the pitbull burst through the door and lunged at the officer before she could do so.
One of the officers, a 29-year-old man, fired shots at the dog but one of the rounds ricocheted and hit a 29-year-old recruit in her wrist.
“I understand the officers were close to the front and the recruits were a little farther behind. So, when the shooting occurred some of the positions might have changed,” said St. Louis City Police Chief John Hayden.
Police say the dog was shot in one of its paws.
Emergency crews rushed the recruit to a local hospital, officials say.
Police say the officer who fired the shots has been in the department for eight years.
Hayden says the recruits went to the call as part of a ride along training for the police academy.
