Jackson County, KS (KCTV/KSMO) — A Kansas man has been charged with murder after he allegedly shot his mother’s husband in the head and trapped her in a bedroom early Tuesday morning.
Derrick Bohnenkemper, 49, of Holton, and has been charged with murder.
Shortly after 3 a.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a call from the Derrick Bohnenkemper’s mother and responded to a home in the 26900 block of Q 4 Road north of Holton.
The woman told authorities that her son had shot her husband twice in the head and that she was barricaded inside a bedroom.
The victim has been identified as Gaylen Bohnenkemper, 73, of Holton.
When deputies arrived, they saw a man inside the home armed with a long gun. The deputies were able to approach the home and rescue the woman by pulling her out of a bedroom window, as Derrick Bohnenkemper tried to break down the door.
Deputies spoke with Derrick Bohnenkemper over the telephone for several hours. He refused to follow orders and refused to leave the home.
Authorities tried to use gas to get him to leave the home, at which time he allegedly fired a shotgun at the deputies, hitting a department vehicle they were using for cover.
Five hours after being called to the scene, Derrick Bohnenkemper finally left the home and surrendered to deputies.
He was taken into custody and was transported to the Jackson County, KS Jail.
Neither the deputies who responded to the scene and the man’s mother were injured during the incident.
