FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) — A local organization is giving back to a Mid-Michigan veteran, who nearly died serving our country.
Habitat for Humanity is doing a major overhaul of the Flint man’s home.
Jason Hanson is a disabled army veteran and a single father.
He bought a home in the Mott Park area for his family.
When the repairs became too much – the folks at Habitat for Humanity answered the call for help in a big way.
Jason Hanson has watched this past week as crews installed a new roof onto his home.
“I can’t put it into words. I was about to give up on the house, and I was in over my head,” Hanson said.
Hanson is an army veteran who severed two one year tours – the first in Iraq and then Afghanistan.
He planned to continue this as his career, but that dream ended after being shot while on duty.
“I was shot in the back, and it came out my chest and blew out my lung and broke all those ribs,” Hanson said.
Hanson, a single father of two, wanted to provide a safe home for his children.
He moved back to his hometown to get a fresh start after a rough spot in his life.
Hanson bought this two-story home in Mott Park, but as the repairs piled up and Hanson was overwhelmed.
He reached to Habitat for Humanity, which specializes in helping veterans when they return home.
They partnered up with Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractors to install this new roof.
“In order to give back, we choose to help the veterans that help us to get to this point in our lives. So, we want to be able to give back through a free roof.”
Hanson was in desperate need of a new roof.
A few of the ceiling tiles in his boy’s room showed signs of leaks from the roof.
The crews didn’t stop there to help a man who put his life on the line for our country.
“The windows have been done. The doors, siding, gutters, roof, and they’re bringing the house up to code. There were some electrical and plumbing issues. It’s going to be good as new when they are all done,” Hanson said.
