Portland, OR (KPTV) — A man jumped from his third-story apartment onto a metal awning to escape an apartment fire on Monday.
Portland Fire and Rescue said the fire started just before 8:30 a.m. in the man’s corner apartment on the third floor located at Northwest 13th and Marshall Street.
Crews said the fire started on the sofa and didn’t extend any further though there was some smoke and water damage to the apartment.
According to crews, the man’s fall was broken by a metal awning making the fall not as bad as if he had landed on the sidewalk.
The man was rescued off the awning. He was conscious and able to talk but was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
No one else was hurt, according to officials.
However, there may have been more water damage to the coffee shop down below.
Baristas at Sisters Coffee Company were at work when someone ran in and to tell them there was a fire upstairs.
“And so I went out and I saw a guy climbing out of the window and smoke and wow that’s clearly a fire and by the time I walked back inside it started dripping. It started coming from the sprinklers,” Sisters Coffee Company Manager Clayton Conifer said.
Sisters Coffee was soon flooded. Fortunately, workers and firefighters were able to cover most of the machinery and save it from water damage.
Still, the shop had to close down for the day disappointing regulars.
“I just came down to get my usual morning coffee and saw all the fire trucks and was wondering what’s going on. I’m glad everyone’s all right but I hope they’re open again tomorrow so I can get my coffee,” Renee Ollison said.
PF&R is still investigating the cause of the fire.
