Portland, OR (KPTV) — Cell phone video captured drivers doing doughnuts around each other Sunday night in the middle of Portland’s Fremont Bridge, stopping traffic headed northbound for about 20 minutes, according to witnesses.
Portland Police confirmed Monday that a couple of drivers involved in the incident were eventually cited for their involvement.
Kristine Britton Dills said she was driving her daughters home around 10 p.m. when suddenly traffic ahead of her on the bridge came to a halt across all lanes.
“I thought it must be an accident because it was like the traffic was moving just fine and then all of a sudden, all four lanes were stopped,” Britton Dills said.
Britton Dills said she pulled off to the shoulder only to find that cars were racing around doing doughnuts and people were gathered around filming. The video shows several people jumping back when the circling cars get close.
“I felt like someone could die,” Britton Dills said. “I felt like they could hit someone, or one of the cars could wreck.”
Britton Dills’ 12-year-old daughters told FOX 12 the incident was scary and surreal.
“They were so close to hitting people and from hitting the edge of the bridge,” Ripley Dills said. “We thought they were going to fly off the bridge.”
“I’m not against people coming together and enjoying their cars but this caught up people who didn’t choose to be involved in it – on a freeway, on a bridge, it just seemed really dangerous,” Britton Dills added.
It’s unclear what citations those drivers faced and how many people were involved in the incident.
