Surprise, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) — A 19-year-old Surprise man has been arrested after he reportedly crashed his car into another man in a Walmart parking lot… on purpose.
Chet Becker, Jr., told investigators he “intentionally struck the victim with his vehicle because he was mad at him,” according to a press release from the Surprise Police Department.
According to the police report, Becker was at the location to meet a girl (not his current girlfriend) and the victim was there as part of a plan to catch Becker “in the act of meeting another female.”
Police say the current girlfriend’s stepfather was the victim.
On Monday night at around 8:45, police were called to the parking lot of the Walmart Neighborhood Market near Greenway and Reems roads in reference to a private property collision with injuries.
During the investigation, it was learned that the driver of the vehicle had struck another man.
Police say the driver and the victim knew each other and had been engaged in a verbal argument over how the driver had been treating his girlfriend.
When the victim walked in front of the driver’s vehicle, the driver accelerated and struck him, according to police.
Becker reportedly “hit the gas and ran over the victim, pinning him under the front of the vehicle,” according to the police report.
Police say Becker then got out of the vehicle and took off on foot.
Police managed to catch up with him and take him into custody.
The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He suffered severe injuries. “His face was swollen to the point of his head was a darker color than his body. His eyes were swollen shut,” states the police report.
Becker was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for felony charges of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury.
