The coronavirus pandemic may have a lasting impact on students who plan on studying abroad.

Carroll College had seven students in their Global Studies program when the pandemic hit.

Shannon Ackeret is the Assistant Director of the program.

She said the students' programs were canceled because of the pandemic.

They had to come home and finish their studies online.

Students who had planned on studying abroad this summer had to make other plans since all programs were canceled.

Ackeret says they have two students who are signed up to study abroad this fall, but even those programs are still up in the air.

"Just not knowing what it could mean. If you do travel now, are they going to be interrupted again and be told to come home and have to finish out their studies online, which is really not the purpose of study abroad. They want to go and immerse themselves in that culture, which includes the educational system. So I think right now we are just kind of playing by ear, going slow, trying to be safe," said Ackeret.

Ackeret says the coronavirus has changed the entirety of Global Studies.

She's still unsure if the students they expected to come to Carroll from abroad will be able to study here in the states in the Fall semester.
