Orlando, FL (WESH) — WESH 2’s CommUNITY Champion of the Week is helping Central Florida girls boost their confidence and spirit.

The Purple Angels are marrying life skill lessons with those that empower young women to reach their potential.

Latoya Sheffield, the CEO and president of Purple Angels, said she grew up in the foster care system. When she aged out, Sheffield said she didn’t have the resources she needed to be successful.

“We are The Purple Angels and we use a foundation of faith to empower and mentor girls to soar in life,” Sheffield said.

Sheffield is creating a space to give girls the tools she didn’t have by focusing on faith, mentorship and empowerment.

“So that they understand they are valuable and royal and that they can dominate the world,” Sheffield said.

She said positive affirmations are a big part in boosting their confidence.

“I think it’s very important for my girls to understand their value and their worth,” Sheffield said.

The girls participate in art, community service and learn about health and wellness. They also learn life skills, like how to cook.

“It’s very important for them to learn how to cook and learn the basic skills about contamination, how to hold the knife,” Sheffield said.

Along with lessons on food, they get lessons on finances.

“Outside this environment, you can’t imagine how much girls go through on a daily basis, so I just want to create an environment where they can be successful, where they can rejuvenate, know who they are,” Sheffield said. “So they can be better equipped to overcome adversity.
