San Diego, CA (KGTV) — A San Diego family is pleading for the release of their father after they say Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers apprehended him last month.

Gilberto Mayorga’s family said he was arrested on June 20 less than a quarter mile from their home. Mayorga faces deportation for being in the U.S. illegally.

ICE officials said they make these types of arrests routinely but could not immediately on comment on the specifics of Mayorga’s case.

Mayorga’s children said their father’s only crime was caring too much and it’s hard to imagine life separated from him.

“He’s been here’s since he was 17, 16. All he knows is San Diego. All he knows being here,” daughter Eugenia Mayorga said.

Family members said Mayorga was previously deported in 2003 but reentered the country after their mother struggled to support their family.

“As soon as he came back, I remember having a roof over our heads,” daughter Bridgette Rembao said. “I feel like the only crime he made was to come back and financially support us.”

Mayorga is expected in court on July 18.
