BUTTE — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) said on Tuesday that the bridge on MT Highway 41 South that spans the Beaverhead River in Twin Bridges cannot currently support traffic, and it is reviewing options to reopen the stretch of highway running south to Dillon as soon as possible.

MDT said in a news release that "a reinforced concrete pier wall foundation is actively failing due to deterioration of the concrete supporting steel girders" on the bridge near the intersection with Main Street in Twin Bridges.

MDT is expediting a project to replace the bridge, according to the release, while evaluating repair options in the meantime that would reopen the bridge to pedestrian, passenger vehicle, and emergency services traffic.

There is, however, currently no timeline for reopening the bridge, according to MDT. The release continued:

MDT understands the importance of this bridge to the community and traveling public. Restoring travel on this route is a top priority for the Department.

MDT said more information will be released as it is available, and the public can contact Lisa Gray at, or call 406-208-0551 to learn more about the bridge closure.

(first report)

Montana Highway 41 South is currently closed between Twin Bridges and Dillon, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office said on social media the highway is closed to through traffic due to a bridge incident at the structure over the Beaverhead River in Twin Bridges.

Vehicles must use an alternate route until further notice. The Sheriff's Office asks the public not to call Madison County Dispatch for information on when the highway will reopen.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), MT-41 is open to local traffic south of the bridge closure.

Travelers can check the MDT 511 mobile app or Traveler Information Map for updates.
