BOZEMAN — Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.
Thousands of people across the country are making their way to special masses and services to signal the start of the six-week period before Easter.
But for those Christians with limited time today, St. James Episcopal Church is making it quick and easy to receive their ashes on the go.
“May we pray for you,” asked Deacon Connie Campbell-Pearson.
Campbell-Pearson and Archdeacon Roxanne Klingensmith invited people to receive their ashes on the go.
“Well would you like some ashes? Well, come on up,” Campbell-Pearson said.
Normally, the church sits on the corner of East Olive Street, but for Ash Wednesday, Campbell-Pearson and Klingensmith decided to bring the church a few streets over.
“Georgia, and remember you are dust and to dust you shall return,” said after giving someone their ashes.
Receiving the ashes started during the Middle Ages, but these two ladies are putting a modern day twist on it by making it easily accessible right here on Main Street.
The deacon duo stayed on Main Street throughout the afternoon, giving even the furriest a chance to receive the ashes.
"And Maddie, same goes for you," Campbell-Pearson said to a dog waiting to get her ashes with her owner.
So, whether you’re traveling on four paws or four wheels, the ladies were happy to provide ashes on the go.
“Nice to meet you. Would you like some ashes today?” Campbell-Pearson cheerfully asked people walking by.
This is the fifth year St. James has offered ashes on the go in downtown Bozeman.
