GALLATIN COUNTY — As the summer season wraps up, residents should remember to be extra cautious of bears during this time of year.

The fall and spring season is when bears are most active, and grizzlies or black bears are known to live near Gallatin Valley.

Officials with the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP) department say the message of safety, taking extra precautions, and deterring bears from visiting cannot be stressed enough.

“The biggest thing is to just remember that there are bears here. There’s black bears and grizzly bears in this part of the state, and it’s each person’s responsibility to take precautions, to one protect themselves and the people they’re with but also to keep bears wild and keep them behaving naturally," explained Morgan Jacobsen with FWP.

Morgan says now is the perfect time to get some bear spray if you don’t already have some, especially for college students coming from out of state.
