MSU Upper Gym demolition continues ‘carefully’ to protect fitness center

The careful deconstruction of the last of MSU’s gyms to be impacted by roof collapses months ago continued today.

MSU officials say taking down the Upper Gym should take between four to six weeks.

And the process is slow for a reason.

Crews are using a large crane to take down the walls piece-by-piece — then destroy them once they are on the ground.

That way, the demolition will steer away from causing any damage to the remaining fitness center.

Officials say the next step, which will aim to replace all three missing gyms with something new — is in the distant future.

“We’re still looking into the process, right?” says Michael Becker, MSU News Service director. “It’s going to be a long process that is going to heavily involve the students and the users of the facility in getting their feedback and their ideas and that’s a process that people are really going to see kickoff this fall when the students return to campus.”

Construction traffic will be using the Fieldhouse entrance ways during this time, so officials say any further road closures should be minimal, if any, at all.
