BUTTE – A downed power line sparked a brush fire in a rural area southwest of Butte late Friday afternoon.

Paid and volunteer firefighters from the Butte area rushed to a fire burning in a gulch just off of Ski Area Loop about 4:30 p.m.

A downed power line is believed responsible for starting the fire and firefighters quickly contained the fire burning in thick brush in rocky terrain.

“The flames are down, there’s still a little concern with the wind, but we have about 12 people in there right now with packs with water with tools to handle the scene,” said Boulevard Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed Fisher.

The chief added that firefighters are putting out hot spots and no structures in the area are threatened by the fire.
