Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder’s Office gets approval for new election clerk

BOZEMAN – With a busy election season ahead, the Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder’s office got a much-needed boost at Monday’s Gallatin County Commission meeting.

With both the county-wide school election, followed by the 2018 primary in June, the Election Clerk’s office could use an extra set of hands.

Two current employees with the Clerk and Recorders office are running for positions in that same office this election cycle, making them ineligible to assist with ballot administration.

Back in November, Election Administrator Charlotte Mills drafted a five-page request to county commissioners asking for the hire of a full-time Election Administrator.

Monday, county commissioners approved an $11,000 increase in funding to hire an additional election clerk for the remainder of the fiscal year.

“The election process is really complicated, and you can’t just bring somebody in one day and have them know what to do on the computer system,” Mills said. “So, it actually takes about a month to get someone up to speed, and if they start now, they’ll be able to help us during the school election on May 8 and then again going into the primary on June 5,” she said.

The funding will carry the position through the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
