BOZEMAN — St. James Episcopal Church held its annual pet blessing at Canterbury Park on Sunday afternoon.

The event takes place every year on the first week of October to coincide with the Feast Day of Saint Francis.

“We want to acknowledge the wonder and joy and beauty that is found in creation especially in our living friends and pets. They’re so much a part of our life and our families it’s appropriate that we do so,” said Father Clark Sherman.

Church goers brought their furry, feathered and scaly family members for a blessing led by Father Clark.

Ceremonial blessings of pets and animals are common around the world and are practiced across a variety of religions.

It’s also a time to celebrate the unique human-animal relationship many people have with their pet companions.

“It’s just as wonderful as human fellowship, coming together with our animals. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Shelby Kencht heard about the blessing at her church service and decided to bring her dog friend Daisy to the event.

"She is a three year old Boykin Spaniel. She doesn't look like it right now, but she has lots of energy all the time. She’s my best friend,” said Kencht. “I’m just really thankful for the experience and thankful to get the most important thing in my life blessed today.”
