Page, AZ (KNXV) — A teen visiting from out of state was found dead at Horseshoe Bend on Christmas Eve.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook for reports of a missing 14-year-old girl on Monday. Her family had last seen her around 2 p.m. at the overlook and reported her missing around 4 p.m.

CCSO Search and Rescue teams, along with the Department of Public Safety Air Rescue out of Flagstaff, responded to search the area. Rescue teams aboard the DPS helicopter eventually found the missing teen about 700 feet below the overlook later that evening. Crews visually determined the teen was dead.

Authorities were unable to continue rescue operations due to impending nightfall, and returned Christmas morning and recovered the body around 10 a.m.

Officials said the initial investigation indicates an accidental fall; however, the incident is still under investigation and pending review by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The family was visiting from the greater San Jose area.
