Europa, MS (WAPT) — The Webster County sheriff has been arrested on several felony charges, state investigators said Wednesday.

Tim Mitchell, 53, of Eupora, is charged with two counts of embezzlement, two counts of trafficking in stolen firearms, one count of attempting sex and/or sexual acts with an inmate, one count of tampering with physical evidence, three counts of retaliation against a witness, one count of permitting possession and/or sale of controlled substance in jail and two counts of furnishing an inmate with weapons, a cellphone and narcotics, authorities said.

Mitchell’s arrest was the result of investigation involving the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the offices of the attorney general, state auditor and district attorney.

Mitchell is in his second term as sheriff. He announced earlier this month that he would retire Jan. 2, according to WTVA-TV.

If convicted, Mitchell faces a maximum sentence of 152 years in prison and fines up to $1.2 million, authorities said.

Mitchell was being held at the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department at least until his initial court appearance.
