Washington County, Oregon (KPTV) — A 36-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after he was caught on camera hitting a dog.

Thomas William Sugars is facing a charge of first-degree aggravated animal abuse.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Sugars was arrested after a video that showed him yelling at and punching a dog was posted on Facebook.

Deputies said the video was recorded Thursday at a home on Sellers Road in Banks while Sugars and the person who recorded the incident were visiting someone.

The dog, who is a 1-year-old pit bull mix named Duke, belongs to Sugars.

Duke had reportedly been barking for an hour before Sugars allegedly decided to hit him.

On Saturday, the person who recorded the incident contacted authorities and deputies tracked down Sugars via cell phone. He met with deputies at a location in Aloha on Sunday and he admitted to being the man in the footage, according to the sheriff’s office.

Duke was taken into protective custody and then transported to Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter. The sheriff’s office said it did not appear to be injured and thanked the public for their interest in the case and Duke’s well being.
