Flint-Saginaw-Bay City, MI (WNEM) — A local teen is back in the hospital as he battles cancer for the third time in his young life.

Facing mounting bills at the hospital and at home, the family is reaching out for any help they can get.

“I feel like it’s a curse. That’s how bad it’s been for the last four years,” said Prescilla Escamilla.

Prescilla’s son, Xavier, is in the fight for his life for the third time.

He has a rare form of leukemia called early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he relapsed in spring.

After a summer filled with pokes and prods, he’s still not doing any better.

“We went for induction treatment and that failed. Then we went for second round of chemo hoping it would work, that failed, and now we’re on our third,” Prescilla said.

Prescilla said doctors found two new mutations on top of what he’s already fighting. She’s hoping this new treatment can send his cancer into remission and so he can prepare for a bone marrow transplant.

“We’re crossing our fingers that he’ll go into remission. He’s on a rollercoaster of feeling good, not feeling good, so this chemo is taking a toll on his body,” Prescilla said.

As if the stress of a sick child wasn’t enough, Prescilla herself is having quite the medical scare.

“They found a blood clot on my brain and three tears in arteries, which was chasing interrupting blood flow to brain. I was in ICU getting care for at McLaren,” she said.

Now, they need the community’s help.

“Transportation back and forth is expensive. Parking is very expensive. Eating at Ann Arbor is expensive I’m not able to work due to my condition, and to be at Xavier’s side, so right now my work is on hold,” Prescilla said.

The family created a GoFundMe page which has raised more than $11,000.

Prescilla said Xavier would also love it if people sent him cards and care packages.
