PITTSBURGH (KDKA-TV) — Pittsburgh Police are investigating after a woman says she dove through the window of a home on Pittsburgh’s South Side overnight for her own safety.

Shattered glass still covers the sidewalk outside the home on 16th Street. It all started after midnight.

Police say the woman feared for her safety and needed to make a quick exit. Investigators have not yet released the details of what happened inside the home, but said when the woman went inside she had some sort of confrontation with several men on the second floor.

She felt the only way to get out was to dive through a first-floor window.

“She attempted to run from the house,” said Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Mike Pilyih. “She ran down the steps and couldn’t get out the front door, and then actually dove through the window down to the sidewalk.”

The woman had some injuries to her head and face. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

“It’s definitely shocking, wouldn’t expect anything like this to happen next door,” Sam Reihs, the next-door neighbor, told KDKA’s Meghan Schiller.

Reihs said he didn’t hear anything, and said he just moved into the neighborhood a few weeks ago.

“I haven’t observed anything out of the ordinary,” said Reihs. “I’ve seen like a few people live there.”

Police say the woman ran to Carson Street and found a police officer immediately after the incident.

KDKA’s cameras rolled as officers interviewed a man sitting on the curb. He has been identified as 34-year-old Robert Abbott. He lived inside the home.

Late Friday morning, police obtained a warrant and recovered heroin inside the house.

Abbott is now facing criminal charges.

No charges have been filed and no one answered the door at the home several hours later.
