Arizona (KPHO/KTVK) — A new breakthrough immunotherapy treatment being tested in clinical trials here in Arizona is showing promising results in the fight against different types of cancers.
A group of inhibitors has resulted in improving survival for some patients diagnosed with a range of cancers.
Dr. Monte Shaheen of the University of Arizona Cancer Center is part of a clinical trial underway called Illuminate-204.
The trial is showing promising results especially for melanoma patients who have failed immunotherapy and are out of treatment options.
“A few years ago, unfortunately at that time, most people with advanced melanoma would not make it more than a year,” said Dr. Shaheen. “These days with the introduction of effective immune therapy drugs, almost like 50 percent of patients have the tumor disappear completely and they stay in remission for years and a lot of them get cured.”

Doctors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital used it to cure a 3-year-old who had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Dr. Shaheen said this treatment is very similar to that and has similar type results without having to go through a rigorous series of events.
