"Beyond The Dam" offers fun and safety tips

Posted: Jun 09, 2018 7:26 PM Updated:

More than 500 cyclists and 100 volunteers participated in the second annual Beyond The Dam event in Great Falls on Saturday.

There were three routes for cyclists to choose from ranging in difficulty, but each course allowed them to walk across the Black Eagle Dam.

The two-day event was geared toward promoting dam safety and how to recreate around the many dams in Great Falls.

“The river is a resource for the entire state of Montana and our jobs include public safety, conservation and preservation, as well as generating clean, carbon-free power for the state of Montana, but like any kind of facility, being safe and being aware around the dam is extremely important,” said Bob Rowe, the CEO of NorthWestern Energy.

All proceeds raised from the event will be given back to improving the River’s Edge Trail.

(FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018) The second annual "Beyond The Dam" event kicked off Friday evening for its two-day safety event.

This year, folks will see some new components, like a free concert and fireworks show.

The F.O.G. and the Bop-A-Dips were the two bands performing. There was also a classic car show.

On Saturday, there will be three bike rides of different difficulties, but each one will cross Black Eagle Dam.

This event is geared toward promoting dam safety.

“We’re trying to promote dam safety and we’re talking to folks about recreating safely around dams, and so it’s really exciting because we could just take the money and buy TV commercials, newspaper ads and signs, but this is a way to really share with the community and put together a fun event that promotes dam safety, recreating safety, and taking care of the spots that we recreate in Montana while having a really great time,” said Josh Peck, creative services specialist.

People who registered for the bike ride can pick up their packets until 7 p.m. on Friday at Heritage Park.

The first ride starts on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will also be provided.
