Supporters of women's equality resolution pack Bozeman city commission meeting

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - Monday night’s Bozeman City Commission meeting was packed full of people taking a stance against discrimination.

More than 20 people lined up against the wall as they waited for their turn to speak. They spoke in support of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, also known as CEDAW.

Many noted the city needs to sign the CEDAW resolution to address issues like sex trafficking, domestic violence and equal pay for all.

Aja Desmond from HAVEN domestic violence shelter said the city needs to take action soon.

“Now is the time for our city to recognize the importance of standing for gender equality and take brave action. The lives of the women in our community depend on it. City commissioners, I respectfully ask that you schedule a vote regarding proposed resolution and create a task force dedicated to addressing gender equity in Bozeman,” Desmond said.

The speakers gave a petition to the commissioners with more than 900 signatures from citizens in support of Bozeman for CEDAW.
