Meteorologist Carson Vickroy: More melting expected early in the week

Posted: Updated:

Hello everyone and thanks for tuning into KBZK and KXLF on the weekends. To help improve forecast interpretation for our viewers to and to help them better understand what's going on, I've created a forecast discussion blog. Here's how this will work, I'll first deliver a viewer friendly forecast discussion. The second discussion will be much more in depth, and will give a much more scientific view of what's going on.

Tonight-Early Next Week

We didn't warm up as much as what we were expecting today due to cloud cover over the area. Cloud cover acts to absorb some of the incoming sunlight that's required to heat up the earth's surface. There's a weak disturbance located and central parts of Idaho that is responsible for the cloud cover. Our snow chances tonight are near zero with maybe a few flurries over the extreme southern parts of the viewing area. Otherwise most location will fall into the teens again tonight under partly cloudy skies. The warming trend will continue tomorrow with temperatures expected to top out in the middle 40s area wide.

In addition, warmer temperatures have been melting some of the snow in the mountains. As a result, rivers, creeks, and streams have been running above a normal water level. This has prompted the NWS (national weather service) to issue a flood advisory for Northern Gallatin, Broadwater, and Jefferson counties. If you see standing water along area roadways while driving, TURN AROUND. It's never safe to drive in flood waters.

Wednesday Night-Weekend

Another storm system out in the Pacific will deliver the areas next chance of rain and snow over the region by Wednesday night. This system will bring cooler temperatures as well. Currently, the disturbance is weak which will result in minimal snow accumulations.
