Snowpack Continues To Climb Across Montana

Posted: Updated:

Weekly update on snowpack across Montana continues to climb week after week. The entire state is "slightly" to "well above" normal on snow water equivalent (the amount of water in the snowpack).

If this trend continues heading into March we may need to start planning on possible flooding once all that snow melts out in the Spring. Too early right now to start preparing for possible flooding but that may be an issue down the road.

In years past, snowpack has been melting out sooner rather than later in the early Spring months and because of this trend water shortfalls and flash drought along with a terrible summer and fall fire season have been the norm for Montana. So will this trend again hit the state? Too early to tell but if we continue to see a cold and snowy weather pattern late winter on top of good wet spring snow storms after March there could be adequate water needs in Montana this summer.

Although snowpack is a huge part of what fills reservoirs along with rivers and streams during the summer another factor is the "Spring rainy season". This plays a critical roll on adding water content and plant growth during the months of May and June. This will be looked at closely and analyzed as we get closer to the Spring season.

For now the news is all good, a healthy mountain snowpack is always welcomed news this time of year.
