World-record ram produced in northwest Montana

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL - Wild Horse Island in northwest Montana is now home to the world-record ram.

The animal's horns and skull have been in storage in Kalispell since Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials discovered them in Fall of 2016.

"This bighorn sheep lived on Wild horse Island State Park and was pretty famous amongst wildlife viewers," said FWP spokesman Dillon Tabish. "And low and behold, it is the pending world-record.  It will be confirmed at the end of this month but it's the world-record by a long-shot."

Tabish says earlier this week they had it measured at the Boone and Crockett Club in Missoula.

"They score it by going around the diameter, the girth, the length of the horns and there are all kinds of measurements that going into it to equal that Boone and Crockett score," Tabish added.

"This ram right here from Wild Horse Island was scored at 216 and 3/8ths so nearly 7" in terms of scores is huge.  That's evidence that our conservation partnerships, our critical habitat works and our state parks produce world-record results," Tabish explained.

Tabish says it's a historic moment in Montana history and Wild Horse Island has a special place in history.

"Now with the addition of this ram and another one that we found from late-2016 three of the top ten biggest rams of all time are from Wild Horse Island State Park."

FWP is offering the public a chance to come check out this historic wildlife monument at a viewing at their headquarters in Kalispell. The ram's horn and skull will be on display at FWP's regional headquarter in Kalispell from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.
