"Dreamliner" visits Valley County

Posted: 12/03/2017 20:19:00 -07:00 Updated:

On Friday, December 1st, the community of St. Marie in Valley County enjoyed a visit from a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The area was home to Glasgow Air Force Base decades ago, and the property is now used as a testing site for Boeing.

Frank and Lin Vargo stopped to take some photos of the plane - which boasts of a wingspan of nearly 200 feet - and shared the following information:

The very quiet 787 stayed for several hours doing test runs with what are called “touch and goes” where the large plane takes off then circles the field, we are talking miles here, then returns and lands and then takes off again. As an old Air Force man myself familiar with the Boeing WB-47E and the B-52 Bomber this Dreamliner plane is whisper quiet by those other planes standards.

There were a few "lookie loos" who stopped along the 5th Avenue adjacent to the airfield to observe the very shiny aircraft that came in. We do not get too many visits from the Boeing Company out of Seattle, Washington. The field now called Glasgow Industrial Airport was once an Air Force base that was in service from 1957 to 1968 then again from 1972 to 1978 but now is a test field for Boeing and MARCO which is Montana Aviation Research Company which is a subsidiary of Boeing. The airfield is 17 miles north of Glasgow Montana.
