Obituary: Lou Ann Westlake

Posted: Updated:

Lou Ann Westlake, age 90, passed away peacefully November 4, 2017 in Bozeman, Montana, from complications of Alzheimer’s, with family at her bedside.

She was born Lou Ann Marie Webb on September 26, 1927, to Robert E. Webb and Marie (Jones) Webb in Livingston, Montana.  As a child, she lived between Livingston and Bozeman, and spent some summers with her grandparents in Washington.  Lou Ann attended Longfellow school in Bozeman, graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1945, and attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, Washington.

She and Vernon Lovitt Westlake were married on March 25, 1950 in Bozeman. Together, they raised two children, Stuart and Lynn.  They resided on family farms in the Bozeman and Anceney areas.  She supported Vernon in all of his farming activities, and her children in their activities, including sports, 4-H and music. They were married 61 years before Vernon’s death in 2011.

After her children were grown, Lou Ann became a non-traditional college student before that was common. She graduated with honors from MSU Bozeman in 1985 with a Bachelor’s degree in History and a minor in Religious Studies. She used her interest in history and volunteered at the Pioneer Museum in the Photo Archive department, and assisted in organizing many historical displays.

She was also active as a member of the Grand Avenue Christian Church, Beta Sigma Phi social/philanthropic sorority, Montana Historical Society, and a local Home Extension Club.  She and Vernon belonged to a formal dancing club and antique auto club.

She enjoyed collecting antiques, gardening, cooking, baking, canning fruits and took pleasure in making homemade cookies and applesauce for her family. She was fond of socializing with friends and family, dancing, playing bridge, playing golf, and traveling.  She loved the company of pets: her cats and the family dog.  She enjoyed providing food for the many birds, rabbits, or deer that lived around the farm.

Lou Ann is survived by son, Stuart (Renee) Westlake of Bozeman; daughter, Lynn (Ron) Coons of Great Falls; grandchildren, Tobi (Jonathan) Brokke of Bozeman, Kaci (Michael) Interlicchia of Los Angeles, CA, Ross Coons of Denver, CO, Jillian Coons of Wenatchee, WA; sister-in-law, Lucille Peter of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Devyn and Dax, extended family, and a special “family” of caregivers at Highgate Senior Living and Compassus Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vernon L. Westlake; parents, Robert E. Webb, and Marie Brown; her stepfather, George Brown; foster parents, W.A. and Ida Shelton; brother-in-law, Fred Peter; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peggy and Milton Schaplow, and half-brother, R. Steve Webb.

A memorial service will be held at Grand Avenue Christian Church on November 25 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, Grand Avenue Christian Church, Gallatin History Museum (formerly Pioneer Museum), Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
