TERRY -- Impaired driving is the suspected cause of a fatal crash north of Terry that left one man dead on Tuesday, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported near McLoud in Prairie County around 4:30 a.m., but MHP Trooper John Metcalfe suspects the crash happened hours earlier.

Troopers arrived on scene around 5:30 a.m. and pronounced the single occupant of a Dodge pickup truck dead. Troopers have not yet identified the man.

Metcalfe said the truck was a rental from Utah and was carrying a trailer with another vehicle.

The driver of the truck was driving on Highway 253 over a bridge when he drifted to the right.

The truck struck a guardrail on the bridge and went over the side.

The truck and trailer separated before the truck rolled and landed on its top.

According to Metcalfe, the driver was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

The victim was described only as a man around the age of 40 from out of state.

Narcotics and alcohol were both found in the vehicle and Metcalfe suspects the substances were factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
