Sense-Ability School caters to children with autism in Great Falls

Posted: Updated:

(GREAT FALLS) There's a new school in Great Falls, but this school is not just any type of school.

The Sense-Ability School caters specifically to children with autism and is located at 1220 17th Street South.

According to the school's founders, they were inspired to start the school after feedback from the community.

With the help of staff and volunteers, students will learn all types of life skills including cooking, cleaning, gardening, hygiene, and interpersonal skills.

The school is open to all ages because they say even some adults need help.

The school was open to the public on Friday in hopes of learning what the community wants to see included in the school.

"We are very open to what the community might have to add, either in volunteering or ideas," founder Rita Rowe Watson said. "We have come up with a lot of ideas but I'm sure there are more ideas in the community."

Rowe Watson added the school wants the families and children in the special needs population to be happy, thriving, and enjoying life.

Rowe Watson explained:  “Public education system has provided a great service for most children with autism. However, they're are some that their needs just aren’t being met, and our goal is to fill in that gap and get those kids ready and back into public school.”

The school will follow Montana State Core Curriculum with the mornings being devoted to academics and the afternoons focused on life skills training.

The afternoons will also feature art, drama, and equine therapy

The school is still being renovated and plans to open by December 4th.
