BILLINGS -- Family Promise Yellowstone Valley, a program that helps homeless families, was able to purchase a new bus to transport families to work, school and life-skills programs thanks to community donations.

The organization has offered transportation to families in need for years, but its previous bus did not have heat.

"It was really cold, so we would have to pick up families personally in our own vehicles," said Family Promise Director Lisa Donnot.

Donnot said the community generously offered up the $25,000 needed to purchase the new bus, with $10,000 coming from Good Shepherd Lutheran and $7,000 from the Breakfast Exchange Club.

Since Oct. 1, the community raised more than $10,000 for the bus.

"The community is incredible," said Donnot. "I'm constantly amazed. It takes an entire community to help our homeless families and the community stepped up to help."

Donnot said Family Promise serves four shelter families, four families in transitional housing and at least 18 children and 16 adults in aftercare.

The bus will transport families to congregation for meals, to work and school, and to life skills programs at Family Promise.
