Annual Can the Griz competition kicks off Saturday

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - Students at MSU are gearing up for the start of Can the Griz this weekend.

The 18th annual Can the Griz food drive is an off-field competition between Montana State University and the University of Montana to see which school can collect the most donations for its local county food bank.

It begins Saturday, Nov. 4, and the competition ends Nov. 18. The winner of the competition will be announced on game day.

According to Community Engagement Programs Coordinator Randi Maiers, there are about 40 offices around campus that have their own collection sites.

“We've had professors reach out to us saying that they would give out extra credit if students either donate or volunteer at the food or grocery drives. But everybody on campus gets into it and we have a big following for it,” said Maiers.

Can the Griz proceeds go to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank and benefits Bounty of the Bridgers, a food resource council at MSU.

They are hoping to raise more than they did last year, which was 234,000 pounds worth of canned goods and $95,000.
