Grizzly bear shot near West Yellowstone

Posted: Updated:

WEST YELLOWSTONE - A Grizzly Bear tried to break into a West Yellowstone home this weekend.

According to Fish Wildlife and Parks, the homeowner had an elk carcass in his garage and that is what may have provoked the Grizzly to come so close to the home.

The man shot the grizzly as it made its way up the front porch.

After an investigation, FWP determined that the shooting was in self-defense and no charges are being filed.

The bear was known to FWP for research purposes but has not been in any trouble before.

"Bears are still awake and they are trying to get extra calories this time of year. People need to be hyper-vigilant, taking the bear spray. That goes for recreationists, homeowners, people who work on ranches, and what not so don't become complacent," said Andrea Jones, spokesperson for FWP.

Jones added that they do not take any grizzly bear death lightly and a full investigation is always conducted.
