Whitefish man stepping up to help those in need

Posted: Updated:

WHITEFISH - 2017 has been a year of disasters.from wildfires across the West, to hurricanes in Puerto Rico and the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

One Whitefish man is giving back to help those in need. Matthew Barela, who works as a cook at two restaurants, says his father was outside the Mandalay Bay Hotel when the shooting occurred.

"I can't imagine losing my dad like that," Barela said. The culmination of all the events inspired Barela to donate his entire two-week paycheck to all three relief efforts.

"Donating my paycheck was easy, I can go to work the next two weeks and make everything back and everything's fine. It's not fine for everyone else," Barela said.

Barela has not only donated his paycheck to all of these disasters but decided to shop for food and supplies for California firefighters as well. The amount of money he is donating may be on the small scale of how much is actually needed, but Barela knows even the smallest donation can make a difference.

"Don't ever think because you aren't rich you can't make a difference in the world. It could be a dollar, it could be a letter saying hey thanks for your time, thanks for trying to help. There's a lot we could be doing, i don't care how small it is if you think you can't make a difference you're fooling yourself," Barela said.
