Yellowstone National Park had its third busiest September on record this year with 640,068 visits. This total is down 8.79 percent from the 701,754 visits in September 2016, according to a YNP news release sent out Wednesday.
The 2017 total is also less than the second-busiest September in 2015, which saw 680,213 visits to the park.
Snowy, inclement weather might have contributed to the decline in visits last month; snow, ice, and avalanche danger caused several days of road closures throughout September.
The total number of visits so far in 2017 is approaching 4 million, although down 2.47 percent from the same time period in 2016, the busiest on record. Recreational visit totals through September for the past five years are as follows:
