MSU professor lands NASA award for eclipse projects

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - NASA awarded Angela Des Jardins the National Space Grant’s Special Service Award for her work in weather balloon launching.

During the full totality of the solar eclipse that happened in August, Des Jardins was the lead professor among 55 weather balloon launches across the country to show the effects during the full solar eclipse. Des Jardins also took video from the experiment.

“In the project, we actually had several different goals,” said Des Jardins, Assistant research professor in the Department of Physics in MSU’s College of Letters and Science. “One was to engage the public in the awe-inspiring view of the eclipse, but also, we had lots of interesting science experiments that students were collecting all kinds of data for. The eclipse balloon project was really an amazing success and highly rewarding, but it also had lots of challenges both personally and professionally so to win this award...it’s really very meaningful.”
