Yellowstone National Park Bison count down 12% from last year

Posted: Updated:

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK - Bison management continues this year in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park spokesperson Jonathan Shaffer says that the total number of bison roaming in the park is down 12% from last year.

On Friday, the total count was at 4,800.

In a study done by Chris Gremia, Rick Wallen, and P.J. White, a recommendation was made for bison removal for the 2017-2018 year.

They said that the bison removal could not exceed 1,250 bison or 25% of the current population.

Bison that are removed from the park are either given to tribal nations or meat processing facilities.
