Arlee mom sending her daughter to WY to escape the smoke

ARLEE - How far are you willing to go to protect your kids from the smoke enveloping Western Montana?  An Arlee mom desperate for her toddler's safety is sending her daughter to Wyoming.

"I have to evacuate my daughter so that she can breathe," said Sadi Chadwick.

That's the choice Sadi felt she had to make - evacuate her three-year-old daughter Karlee Chadwick, whose health is threatened by unrelenting clouds of smoke.

"The smoke is in our house, we can't keep it out of our house,” she explained.  “We've got two air purifiers running all the time but you can still - you breathe in and you can just taste the smoke inside of our house."

Karlee will be staying with her grandmother in Wyoming.  It's a sixteen hour round trip, but grandma says she's happy to make it.

"My mom had been offering to take her for a couple weeks, and I was like no, it'll be fine, it'll be fine.  And now she's waking up every night, coughing so bad that she's not sleeping," said Sadi.

"I cough and now I can't go to sleep.  Keep I coughing, and I want to go sleep and stay asleep and close my eyes.  And I keep coughing in morning.  I lay down and I trying cough really we hide, and I sit up," explained Karlee.

Sadi isn't sure how long Karlee will have to be away and she says that's the hardest part.  She and Karlee are getting in what could be their last mommy-daughter playtime this summer.

"I don't feel like I should have to send my child away to keep her safe," said Sadi.

And though it's hard, she says it's a choice she won't regret making and she encourages other parents to do the same.

"If you have an outlet to get your kids out of the city for, I mean at least a few days or a week so that they can breathe a little bit better and clear their lungs, take it,” she implored.  “I know that it's hard, but sometimes we have to make hard decisions as parents."

As for Karlee?  She's looking forward to seeing her grandparents -- but she's going to miss mom.

"I need my mama and I need my sippy help me stop coughing," said the little girl.
