CCHD recommends families think about flu shots

The Cascade County Health Department recommends getting the flu shot six to eight weeks before the flu season begins, which is around November.

That would mean receiving the shot around late September or early October.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends families get vaccinated by October at the latest.

According to CCHD Public Health Nurse Bowen Trystianson, it's almost never too late to get the shot.

"So if you miss that October deadline you can still come in to the health department and pick it up," Trystianson said. "We would strongly recommend for that just because the flu stays around until usually March, April, and starts to wane down at that time."

The CCHD will host several drive-thru and walk-in flu shot clinics in September.

Along with the regular vaccine, the department will also offer a high-dose vaccine for people 65 and older.

Health experts said the dose contains a higher concentration of flu particles, which helps bolster a stronger immune response.
