The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) Dillon Unit is responding to a new wildfire located approximately 4 miles east of Clark Canyon Reservoir in Beaverhead County.

This fire is burning in grass and brush with pockets of timber east of Interstate 15.  DNRC personnel are fighting this fire alongside Beaverhead County Rural Fire Departments and resources from the US Forest Service,  Montana Air National Guard, and National Wildlife Refuges.

The fire started this afternoon when a four-wheeler, driven by a DNRC employee, caught fire as he was working in the area.   The employee attempted to put the fire out and called additional resources immediately.

The fire spread rapidly due to the high temperatures, low humidity, and very low fuel moistures.

Beaverhead County Sheriff’s Department are notifying ranchers in the area in an attempt to ensure human safety and move cattle from the fire area.

The fire is threatening communication infrastructure and an electronic repeater site in the fire vicinity.  The nearest houses are within three miles of the fire and fire personnel are working with residents to ensure safety and prevent further loss of property.

Houses are not threatened at this time.

The DNRC County Assist Team is scheduled to take over the fire tomorrow, August 24, in the afternoon.

More information will be out soon along with contact information.
