MISSOULA -

An irrigation ditch accident killed a man in his 30's Friday night when the platform he was standing on gave way, sending him into the water.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Friday near Kona Ranch Road west of Missoula.

Missoula County Sheriff's Captain Bill Burt says the victim and another man were working on a platform above the long irrigation ditch when it gave way.

Both men fell into the water but the victim's foot became trapped and he was unable to surface and drowned.

The other man was also hurt but was able to get out of the swift water.

The Sheriff's Office is still trying to notify family so the man's name isn't being released.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
