Obituary: Norma Dayhuff Murdoch

Posted: Updated:

Norma Dayhuff Murdoch, 75, entered into eternal peace on July 31, 2017.  She was born on August 18, 1941, in Pendleton, Oregon, to Florence and Clifford Dayhuff.

Norma spent her childhood years in Pendleton with her older sister, Alberta, and her mother and father.   As a family, they enjoyed attending church activities, going to the movies, riding horses (Smoky and Tony) and living for the Pendleton Round-Up.

Norma attended college at Pacific Lutheran University where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication.  It was there she met Richard Helstrom.  They married and had three children: Jeff, Chris, and Julie.

Norma later met and married the love of her life, John Murdoch, in 1986 and together they created their own blended family of Norma’s three children and John’s four daughters.  John and Norma spent 17 years in Caldwell raising their family, and together they owned and operated D & B supply.  After John “retired” they moved to Bozeman, Montana, the place she considered home for the remainder of her years.  Norma loved Bozeman and loved having her many children and grandchildren visit her.  While in Bozeman, Norma opened a children’s boutique, Peppermint Hollow.  She loved having several grandkids to use as models and one of her favorite activities was bringing her grandkids to her store to outfit them for the year.  While owning Peppermint Hollow, her husband, John, was busy as the owner of Murdoch’s Ranch and Home Supply.  Together they were always busy but enjoyed every opportunity they had a chance to spend a quiet moment together.  With 7 children, 17 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, one could imagine that quiet moments together were few and far between.  While spending time together, they enjoyed some amazing travel adventures, going out to eat, and seeing the latest movie.  Their favorite times together would be at the end of the day when they could sit in their recliners and chat about the events of the day, what they were looking forward to, and enjoy their favorite television program.  The love and companionship John and Norma shared were something that inspired their family and many friends.

During the rare times when Norma wasn’t busy trying to do something for one of her many family members, she enjoyed watching western movies, quilting, shopping, decorating and reading.  Norma loved gambling and very much enjoyed her home in Las Vegas where she was a short drive away from her favorite slot machines.  Norma’s favorite pastime was spending time with her family, and each and every family member could feel her love across the miles.  Coming to visit Grandma and Grandpa was the favorite activity of each of her family members and was looked forward to with eager anticipation.

Left to honor Norma and remember her love is her husband, John Murdoch of Bozeman; her seven children, Cynthia (Jay) Vetsch; Jeff Helstrom; Amy Murdoch, Chris (Mary) Helstrom, Lori Murdoch, Julie (Matt) Matysik, Jennifer (Jake) Murdoch; grandchildren, Alex and Sam Vetsch; McCall and Andrew Helstrom; Max Schneider; Kaitlyn, Casey and Keane Helstrom; Amanda Jenkins, Amber and Allison Murdoch; Ben, Parker, Landon and Olivia Matysik; Shelby Tuttle and William Brown; and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Alberta, and her nephew, Monte. Last but not least. she is survived by her four-legged child – Abby.   Norma loved and was loved by many.  Norma was preceded in death by her parents and other loved ones, and her faith drove the belief that she would one day be reunited with them.

A celebration of her life and service of remembrance will be held at Hope Lutheran Church (2152 W Graf Street in Bozeman, MT) at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 5th.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials in her name to, Bozeman Health Foundation (memo line: Hospice), 931 Highland Blvd. Suite 3200, Bozeman, MT 59715 or Eagle Mount, 6901 Goldenstein Lane, Bozeman, MT 59715.
