Special Doig exhibit featured at fair

BOZEMAN -

Literature may not be the first thing you think of when planning a trip to the fair.

But thanks to the MSU library, people from all over are flocking to this year's exhibit on Montana author Ivan Doig.

"We do have a number of people coming to us and saying 'I came to the fair because of this exhibit.' People are coming from Whitehall, from around the state, and I think that's going to become apparent as the days go on, how many we're drawing," said Jan Zauha, MSU outreach librarian.

In addition to presenting the digital archives, the MSU Library is bringing Ivan Doig's work to life with historical artifacts and interactive activities like poetry and prose contests.

"We're so excited by the opportunity to reach a large number of the community and do something libraries don't normally get to do with digital archives, which is to manifest them in a physical space," Zauha said.

The exhibit also has the chance to introduce Doig's writing and Montana influences to those previously unfamiliar with his work.

"We have a mixture of readers of Doig and non-readers. So we have our little bean jar out here, and if you've read an Ivan Doig book, we invite you to put a bean in the yes jar, if you haven't, in the no jar," Zauha said.

And don't be surprised if you see similar exhibits in future fairs.

"I think one of the visions is the fair becomes multi-cultural in the sense of drawing in different aspects of the community, so we hope we're contributing to that vision," Zauha said.

On Thursday, visit the Doig exhibit at 12:15 pm for an archives lecture followed by story time. A full schedule for all fair events can be found here.
