BILLINGS -

The Billings woman who admitted Friday that she played a role in the heinous beating, dismemberment and decapitation of her boyfriend in 2015 could spend as little as 10 years in prison.

Carri Standsoverbull, 41, pleaded guilty in Yellowstone County District Court on Friday to the charges of negligent homicide, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence.

Standsoverbull was initially charged with deliberate homicide for the murder of Jeffrey Hewitt, 41, but she accepted a plea agreement three days before the case was set for trial.

Prosecutors will recommend a sentence of 60 years to the Montana Women’s Prison with 20 years suspended. There will be no parole restriction, according to Yellowstone County Deputy Attorney Mary Barry, meaning Standsoverbull would be eligible for parole after 10 years.

Barry said other people may be charged in connection with Hewitt's murder in the future.

At the change of plea hearing, Standsoverbull said she negligently caused Hewitt’s death by not “rendering aid to him” when his life depended on it. She said she was guilty of tampering because she “participated in the destruction of the victim’s body.”

Hewitt’s remains were discovered in a burn pile in Pryor on the Crow Indian Reservation.

The body was headless and the limbs had been sawed off, according to court documents.

Law enforcement was able to positively identify the victim with a partial tattoo on his neck. The head was not found with the body, according to court documents.

Detectives also discovered a coupon mailer in the burn pit with a Pryor address.

Investigators went to that home and found the victim’s wallet inside.

Through interviews with people at the home, detectives learned the victim had been severely beaten by multiple people to the point of incapacitation.

Hewitt was left bedridden until he eventually died, about one month prior to the discovery of his remains.

Patrick Standsoverbull, who has been charged with assault and tampering with evidence, allegedly told investigators that Carri Standsoverbull asked him and another man to help dispose of the body.

Patrick Standsoverbull allegedly agreed to help and assisted in dismembering the victim with an ax and chain saw.

He told authorities that Standsoverbull was the one who ultimately caused Hewitt’s death and said his murder was “misery, horrible, painful.”

Standsoverbull initially denied her role in the murder, but told police when they found the victim’s blood in her house that Hewitt had abused her and her children.

Within the plea agreement is the stipulation that prosecutors are able to file new charges against Standsoverbull if additional information arises before sentencing.

Bond was reduced from $500,000 to $250,000.

A sentencing date has yet to be set.
