A man has been charged in federal court for the robbery of a downtown Billings bank in April.

Randy Ray Starnes, 60, appeared in U.S. District Court on July 5 and pleaded not guilty to felony bank robbery.

According to court charging documents, Starnes is accused of robbing the Western Security Bank on April 7.

The robbery happened shortly after 9 a.m. when a man walked into the bank on First Avenue North and gave a teller a note stating he had a gun and demanding money.

Federal prosecutors allege he took $500 during the robbery.

Starnes was not immediately arrested, and law enforcement released photos of the suspect from security cameras. The indictment charging Starnes with the robbery was filed in federal court on June 22. The FBI investigated the case.
