Cancer survivors take flight in Bozeman

BOZEMAN -

They’re beating cancer, and now they’re soaring to new heights.

Cancer Survivor Flight Camp gives young cancer survivors a chance to fly planes over the landscape of Montana, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“When I was in the hospital, I wasn’t like, ‘One day I’ll be flying planes in Montana.’ I never said that to myself.” That was Taylor Tenhoff’s reaction when he discovered he was one of four people invited to attend the camp this past week.

The camp, which is hosted at Summit Aviation in Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, and sponsored in partnership with Eagle Mount of Bozeman, allows these special individuals to have a chance at piloting a Diamond DA-20 two-seater aircraft.

Each one of the four people selected was once a counselor at or attended one of Eagle Mount’s Big Sky Kids oncology camps, and Big Sky Kids Director Kara Erickson said their positivity really stood out.

“At flight camp we look at those counselors who really made an impact or were really inspiring for these other campers and have really given back to the Big Sky Kids family and we actually select them, so we call them and say, ‘Hey, we have this amazing opportunity, do you want to learn how to fly an airplane?”

The decision to come out to Montana was an easy one for 21-year-old Stephanie Ramos, who hopes to use her flight training in the future.

“Knowing that I was going to fly a plane was super cool because I’m in school to be a paramedic, and eventually I want to do air rescue,” she said.

Big Sky Kids hosts ‘Spring Fling,’ ‘Camp Braveheart,’ ‘Young Adult Retreat,’ and Big Sky Adventure Camp,’ for children and young adults who are fighting cancer.
