Obituary: Rose Marie Carney

Posted: Updated:

Rose Marie Carney went to be with our Lord on July 6, 2017, due to complications associated with pneumonia.  Born in Halleyville, OK, on August 16, 1933, during the Great Depression and in the “dust bowl,” Rose Marie was raised in hard times by her mother, Victoria Saunders, and step-father along with two half-brothers, Seth “Sonny” Thomas and Sherman “Buddy” Thomas.  For a while, their home was a boxcar which was moved as needed by the railroad.  The family moved to Amarillo, Texas before her senior year of high school.

Rose Marie was married to James Leslie Holder in 1952, becoming the wife of a Navy aerial photographer.  While serving in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the couple was blessed with a baby girl, Connie Sue (now Dr. Connie Hahn of Bozeman, MT) in 1954.  After the Navy, Rose Marie, Jim & Connie moved to Los Angeles, where Jim studied photography and Rose Marie supported the family as an executive secretary at an advertising agency.  Their son, Jeffrey Scott Holder (now in Evans, Georgia), was born in 1960.

In 1964, Rose Marie was divorced and married John Clifford Carney, a programmer for a growing company known as IBM.  They relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1966, where Rose Marie focused on raising her children in a suburban landscape soon to be known as Silicon Valley.  She was a homeroom mother, school nurse, and general volunteer at her son’s elementary school.  The couple enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, and skiing in the Sierra Nevada.

In 1973, Rose Marie and her family moved to Westlake Village, California, a place that became near and dear to her heart.  She became a travel agent, arranging numerous trips for her and John.  Their favorite place to vacation was Fiji, and their favorite restaurant was in Paradise Cove, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Rose Marie and John spent their final years in Bozeman, Montana.

Rose Marie was preceded in death by her mother, Victoria Schultz Saunders Thompson; her stepfather, Wayne Thompson; her brother, Sherman “Buddy” Thomas and her husband, John Carney, after 47 years of marriage.  Survivors include Connie (Chris) Hahn, Jeffrey (Laura) Holder, Johnnie Lou (Jim) Lunn, Alice (Glen) Lumley and Dave (Leslie) Carney, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Bozeman, MT at 3:30 pm on July 11, 2017, at Aspen Pointe Chapel.  A graveside service will be held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. in Westlake Village, California on July 22, 2017.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local SPCA in memory of Rose Marie and her heart for rescued animals.
