Long Duration Heat Wave Impacting Montana

Posted: Updated:

The first significant heat wave to impact Montana is here and temperatures will continue to be well above average and could on occasion peak near record high levels.

A large blocking high pressure ridge is parked over the western U.S. and plenty of heat is building around this ridge. Cool moist pacific storms we be deflected to the north through Canada as long as this strong High pressure ridge is sitting over Montana.

Monday's high temperatures varied from around 80° in West Yellowstone to 101° in Glasgow. Starting Wednesday most areas around Montana will see 90°+ heat and locally 90° to 95° forecast highs are likely. Central and Eastern Montana could see upper 90s and low 100s through early next week.

Saturday could be one of the hottest days in SW Montana and this will be the best opportunity for nearing record high levels. Record high for Butte Saturday is 95° with a forecast high of 93°. Bozeman MSU your record high for Saturday is 92° with a record high 93°.

It's worth mentioning some common sense tips with our first heat wave of summer. First, slow down do not over exert yourself especially during the hottest hours of the afternoon to early evening. Dress is loose light colored clothing, do not over eat as that will increase your body temperature, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid long periods in the hot sunshine. If possible take numerous breaks if working or playing outdoors and seek shaded areas and try and find air conditioned places. Don't forget your pets as they will suffer from extreme heat as well and please keep them off the scolding hot pavement.

The Montana Folk Festival this weekend in Butte will coincide with the peak of the heat wave. So be prepared for the heat if you plan on spending hours watching and enjoying the music venues.
