Obituary: Charles "Charlie" Francis McGuire

Posted: Updated:

Charles (Charlie) Francis McGuire, 88, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in Bozeman, Montana. He was born to Francis and Isabelle McGuire on their farm in Daniel, Utah, on May 13, 1929.  While attending BYU, he caught the eye of Loralei Holland. They were wed in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 8, 1952.

He attended BYU and after a 2-year mission in England for the LDS church, he returned to BYU graduating in Soils in 1954. He attended Utah State University for an MS in Plant Physiology and North Dakota State University where he received his PhD in Agronomy and Cereal Chemistry.

He moved to Montana in 1969, working in the MSU Plant and Soils Cereal Quality Laboratory specializing in wheat research. In 1975, he went on the first of several trips to Asia to discuss research on U.S. wheat crops. If you wanted the Wheat 101 short course, all you needed to do was sit down for an hour with Charlie. Nothing smelled like home like a fresh batch of bread mixed in his massive 24-quart stand mixer! His green thumb was not restricted to the wheat field. He always had an amazing vegetable garden. In the last few years, his son, Eric, had picked up his love for gardening and taken over the care of his plot. His garden was his peaceful therapy because of his love of watching things grow from the earth ingrained in him as a child. The tulips in the spring always brought a sparkle to his eye.

Charlie retired from MSU in 1994. After his retirement, he and Loralei spent a year living in Nanjing, China, teaching English at Nanjing Forestry University. Their year in China was a highlight and one of many adventures for he and Loralei. They loved everything outdoors and were always up for an adventure. There were many trips to Yellowstone Park beginning early in their marriage. All the grandchildren looked forward to loading up in the van and heading to Yellowstone for a camping trip! They would spend many Mother’s Days enjoying the famous Old Faithful Lodge. The Beartooths were also a good afternoon get-away for Charlie and Loralei. They always loved traveling to Utah or making a quick trip to Billings to take part in the blessings of the Temple.

Charlie loved Barbershop music.  He was a charter member of the Chord Rustlers and was a 43-year Barbershopper. Singing wasn’t his only musical talent. He played trombone in the Bozeman City Band. Summertime was always met with a concert at Bogart Park.

Whether you knew him as Sweetheart, Dad, Papa, Brother McGuire, Charles, Charlie, or Professor, you were a better person for having known him. He was always quick with a smile and a warm greeting, and there was seriously nothing better than hearing his deep belly chuckle. He is deeply loved and sorely missed by too many to count.

He is preceded in death by Francis (Isabelle) McGuire, Richard (Jacklin) McGuire, Lois (Reece) Murdock, and Kate McGuire.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Loralei Holland McGuire; children, Loralei, Chuck, Eric, Trish, and Grant; grandchildren, Cara (Jason) Marks, Jason (Ruth) Vollmer, Nichole (Frank) Thrasher, Loralei LaVoie, Bryan (Ashley) Penninger, Tiana (Blyth) McGuire, Tyleah McGuire, Erica (Michael) Jordan, Emily McGuire; great-grandchildren, Brenden Vollmer, Camille Collins, Malia and Avery Vollmer, Allisha Cottrell, Sean, Drew and Nathan Thrasher, Peyton and Paisley Penninger; as well as a number of furry grand-babies.

A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held Monday, June 26th at 5 pm at the Bozeman Senior Center.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 27th at 10 am at the LDS Church in Bozeman.  Visitation will take place an hour before the service.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
